Discussion:
Why don't US pilots use bug wipers?

Are there really that many more bugs in Europe? Or, are they just more
concerned with clean wings over there?
Are they legal to use in competition over here in the USA? Do they work
well? (European pilots, please answer this one.)

Just wondering if I should order them on the new glider. Rather expensive,
though.

Thanks!

Depends on where you fly..
Not many bugs out here in the wild wild west.
Except for early spring.

FYI John, with the exception of the Open Class ships, bug wipers are
not allowed in US competitions; this rules restriction likely
explains their lack of use here in the states.

I think it's just an informal gentleman's agreement not to bother with
them.

In the US, bug wipers are prohibited in Sports Class (6.6.2).

Fortunately, pilots in the other classes haven't found the gains, if any, to
be worth the hassle/problems.

In some areas of the world (Alps) you are at a severe disadvantage without
them.

No, there is no longer any prohibition on bug wipers in any class.
There used to be but probably not many pilots noticed the rules
changed.

In Arizona the bugs are so dehydrated they don't cause much of a
problem.

Actually it is still in effect for the World Class.

See 6.12.6.5 of the US 2008 rules.

Sell that V2BX, Larry, and get a PW 5......so you won't have to swipe
and wipe...........I just had to say that........

Not to hi jack this tread, but looks like we are getting several 1000
plus k days here in Ely, Nv. Some big wingers are here, along with
some of the crowd of yester years. Ramp area has been repaved and
right now no air service, .....ya..... but TSA is still in the
terminal.
Last few weeks we have been under smoke from the west, but the skies
are starting to clear out. We can see blue again..........
